In Defence of Potter.
Whoa.
Okay, this may go against the tide of opinion in in the crackvan that is the HP fandom, but I actually like Harry.
You know, the main character of the book, gawky adolescent in the broken glasses and baggy clothes? Yeah. Him. In fact, after the HBP cover, I may be so bold to say that I nurse a geeky crush on him. Bite me. >:o
Whyfor all this Potter hate? I've seen a few people lately (not going to name names) who are all "Oh my god, I adore Sirius/Snape/Draco/Percy/the Marauders/etc., but I can't stand Harry. Fucking little whinger." Um, hello? The point of the series is to get to know Harry's journey from childhood to adulthood throughout his years at Hogwarts. Not some other secondary character. No, not even Ron and Hermione. And no, most certainly not Draco. Note that I'm not saying that you can't get to know them - of course not, JKR's established a richly detailed universe and we'll all have our favourite aspects of it. What I'm trying to say is that, why is it that so many people like all these other character BUT also dislike Harry intensely at the same time?
While we see all these children growing up together and into their own different ways, Rowling's mostly telling us about our boy Harry, giving us clues to his personality and his thoughts and his feelings so that when it comes to those final few chapters of Book 7, we'll have an idea of how he'll come to face whatever final test is left for him at the end of the series (yeah, try telling anyone that there won't be some final showdown with the Dark Side.).
Am I the only one that's really cheering for Harry? You know, knowing that he's a complete dipshit in OoTP and yet forgiving him for it - realising that because of the person he is, because of the life that he's led, he will eventually be mature enough to not chuck a tantie everytime things don't go his way? Knowing that perhaps at some point, some form of evil might make itself actually attractive to him, and he might be forced to consider other options aside from Dumbledore?
I know that some people tend not to care either way, knowing that the likelihood is quite high, but I'm going to be pretty fucking disappointed if Harry ends up dying at the end of Book 7. And you know, with the wailing and the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, etc etc. And with the sixth book about to come out and all, I keep getting that sinking feeling that Harry's number is going to be up soon. *clutches him protectively to bosom*
Man, I suck at meta. This is why I never try starting any fandom discussion. Heh. (n) Anyway, someone come and defend Harry, please? :>
shit I'm supposed to be paying attention to this lecture. Why do you mock me, God?
Edit: Ah, shit. Figures as soon as I get around to actually writing this, someone has the same idea and beats me to it. I suck.
